How to Get a Reciprocal Link

As the old adage goes, if you want to make a friend, be a friend. The same holds true for getting reciprocal links on your website. Always provide a link on your website before asking for a reciprocal link from someone, and search websites that already rank in the first page of a search engine’s results for keywords related to your website. Keep in mind that popular websites get a lot of spam, including automated requests for reciprocal links, so always be polite when requesting a reciprocal link, and don’t be upset if you don’t get a reply.

Difficulty:Moderately Easy1
Use a search engine like Google and enter keywords in the search field that relate to the subject of your website. Right-click on each of the resulting Web pages on the first page and open them in a new browser tab. Repeat this as many times as you wish using new keywords to search for additional websites.
2
Go to the homepage of each website you opened in a new tab. Examine the website to see if it is relevant to your website’s subject. Look at dates on articles or blog entries to ensure that the website is active. Read some of the content to determine whether or not it is something you should be recommending to your visitors with a link. If it is not active or relevant for your visitors, close the tab.
3
Examine the website for links to other websites. On a WordPress blog, for example, look for a “Blogroll” on the left or right of the homepage. Look for words like “Links,” “Friends,” “Other Sites,” “We Recommend” or something similar. If you find no outgoing links to other websites, close the tab.
4
Look for a “Contact” page on the website. Make a note of the email address and the contact name.
5
Create a link to the website on your own website.
6
Send an email to the contact person of the website. Explain specifically what you liked about the website that made you want to share links. Ask her if she would create a link back to your website, or to a specific page on your website. Include a link to the page you want her to link to, as well as a link to the page that contains the link to her website.
7
Create a new folder in your email program and place all of your link request emails in the folder. Visit the website after one week. If you have not heard from the person you contacted, or see a link to your website, send a follow-up email.
8
Wait one more week and check the website again. Send one more follow-up email, explaining that you will take the link down if the person does not contact you or provide a reciprocal link. If you still do not get a reciprocal link, remove the link from your website.
